Murgen is the name of a mermaid who was carried to a church in a vat and baptized in the 16th century. She had the choice of dying right after baptism or living 300 years before going to Heaven; she chose the former. She was baptized Murgen, or Sea Foam, and put on the calendar of saints. This relates to medieval lore that mermaids and other magical creatures have no souls, memorably dramatized in Andersen's The Little Mermaid.
